Persuade Me (Darcy & Friends #2)

Author: Juliet Archer
Publisher: Choc Lit Limited
Publishing date: 2011
Pages: 341

When Anna and Rick encountered and fell in love with each other for the first time they were really young and their fates were moving in different directions. Anna let her aunt persuade her to leave Rick and go to the university, and so she did. But even after many years she can't forget her only soul mate. And neither can he even though he moved so far away to start a new life. When the chance of meeting each other again appears both their lives suddenly collide...

"I'm listening to you - I can hear every word, however softly you speak - and I'm half-agony, half-hope. You're saying that men are realists - that, when the woman they love is no longer available, they move on. Well, believe me, I tried - and I thought I had. But seeing you again, after so many years, just proved how little I knew..."

Juliet Archer's book Persuade Me was the second modern re-telling of Persuasion by Jane Austen that I have read during a year. And even though one would expect something similar, it was actually very different. And I have enjoyed this book as much as the first one. I love to read my favourite stories again and again in different versions. It's a completely new experience from reading. Sometimes I am able to understand the originals even more after reading insights of the new authors in their fan-fictions. It's like having a book club and discussing the stories from totally different points of view.

What I liked about this book in particular, was the way Juliet Archer conceive the whole relationship between Anna and Rick. Of course that the main thing about that was inherited from Persuasion, but I would say that Juliet Archer also created a completely new love story that the reader could read with thrilling expectations, and yet with some familiarity as well. I adored her beautiful and witty writing style as well as her description of the ambience. I also appreciated an apperance of some new characters that somehow enriched the whole story. I would definitely recommend this book to all the fans of beloved Jane Austen as well as to the readers that weren't acquainted with her work yet.
